New York Mets and the Pitching Market

It has been no secret that since the Mets traded RA Dickey they have been in the market for a viable starter to replace him. Here is a list of names that they have been connected to over the past few weeks:

  • Carl Pavano
  • Chris Young
  • Jair Jurrjens
  • Javier Vazquez
  • Aaron Harang (trade option)
  • Chris Capuano (trade option)
  • Shaun Marcum
  • Joe Saunders
  • Daisuke Matsuzaka

According to Matt Cerrone of metsblog.com the Mets are using a guaranteed rotation spot as a recruiting tool for a free agent starter.  My guess is whoever can be had on a 1 year deal is who the Mets would most likely go with here, although, it has been reported the Mets do have a decent amount of money to spend they still have wholes in the outfield and bullpen to fill.  They also do not want to block top pitching prospect Zach Wheeler so a 1 year deal here is the preferred outcome. I would really like to see the Mets reacquire Chris Capuano, for me hes a lefty which is always hard to come by and a guy who has experience pitching in the ballpark. He also has expoirecne pitching out of the bullpen and when or if Wheeler is ready this summer to make the trip to the big leagues he would give the Mets a good left handed option out of the pen considering the unknown status of Tim Brydak.

Speaking of the bullpen Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reported that Sandy Alderson has expressed interest in signing 1 or 2 guys to major league deals for the bullpen.  This is consistent with previous reports from MLB Network's Jon Heyman. Heyman has previously reported that the Mets maybe a possible landing site for Jose Valverde.
