Rex Ryan has failed on his Super Bowl guarantees, and now Peyton Manning has hit him with the biggest blow to his ego and program: The three-ring circus Jets, with their dysfunctional locker room, are not the No. 1 destination for the best players in the league.

The Jets have an image problem. They have shifted from a fun-loving Animal House gang with a laugh-track coach to a circus that not only isn’t the greatest show on Earth, it’s not even the greatest show in New York.

So, going to the crisis handbook on damage control now that they are officially eliminated from the Manning Sweepstakes, the Jets announced late Friday night that even though Mark Sanchez has two years left on his contract, even though he is coming off the worst of his three seasons and GM Mike Tannenbaum had expressed interest in Manning, they had extended Sanchez’s deal by three years.

As soon as the Jets knew they would not get Manning, they finalized the deal with Sanchez. If they had been able to get Manning, then the Sanchez extension goes away. The extension is worth $40.5 million and over the next two years he has $20.5 million guaranteed.

Hey Mark, you’re still our guy, still our San-chise.

Of course, Sanchez has not done enough to earn the extension. Tannenbaum said negotiations have been going on for several weeks. But they were also talking about Manning. Only the Jets.

This deal makes no sense. If Sanchez stinks again this year, the guaranteed money he has coming in 2013 would rob the Jets of flexibility to get rid of him.

It was never Peyton-or-bust. But after showing interest, the Jets had to bring back Sanchez with a smile. They’ve seen enough of that pouty face. The easiest solution: more years, more money.

When the itinerary for the Peyton Over America tour surfaced Friday and the Jets weren’t on it, it became clear they had not made the cut.

Manning met for six hours with the Broncos on Friday night. John Elway, who runs the Broncos, has never seemed sold on Tebow Mania and signing Manning would put the hysteria on hold.

The next stop for Manning reportedly will be Arizona, which overpaid last year for Eagles backup Kevin Kolb. He disappointed. The Cardinals are excited about the idea of Manning throwing to Larry Fitzgerald. And then Manning will be stopping by the Dolphins, who are considered the favorites. Manning has a condo in South Beach and the Dolphins would be immediate playoff contenders with him.

It is too early to declare that Sanchez is a lost cause even though he regressed last season after helping the Jets get to the AFC title game in each of his first two years.

The Jets’ locker room was so toxic by the end of the season that it should have been condemned. They remain dysfunctional, and that doesn’t change just because Ryan says it’s going to change. Ryan admitted he was oblivious to much of the tension that was going on in the locker room on the other side of the building.

Joe Namath all but advised Manning to stay away from the Jets as if they were gangrene, not Gang Green.

“The Jets have to get things together on their own turf before someone with his background would be interested in coming,” Namath told Bloomberg News earlier this week.

The Jets had an easy out in this one. Tannenbaum can use his old standby line that he was doing his due diligence, but Manning surely did his due diligence on the Jets, too. Manning being Manning, he couldn’t have liked what he found.

There could have been other factors that worked against the Jets, too. Manning may have felt New York is his brother Eli’s town and he didn’t want to intrude. He may not have wanted anything to do with the inevitable Manning vs. Manning comparisons that would have appeared in the Daily News every Monday.

Or, he simply may not want have wanted to join the circus.

Here are the teams that are rumored to be in the hunt:

Here is my order, Hot to Cold:

1. Houston Texans: -WHITE HOT- The Texans would be perfect. The team is primed to make a run. Schaub is injury prone and Yates is a quality back up. Trade Schaub, get a 2nd rounder and draft for Peyton. The weather is perfect for Peyton and this could put the Texans in the #1 spot to rule TEXAS! Jerry Jones would have a baby!
2. Arizona Cardinals: -HOT- Arizona would give him Cart Blanche. Rename the team the "Arizona Peytons" if he came. Very attractive team, city and throw in a prime retirement community post super bowl!
3. NY Jets: -Crock Pot High- The money would be sick. Imagine. Eli and Peyton in the same stadium. MannSanity! That's right! I inked it! MannSanity!
4. Seattle Seahawks: -Warm- Intriguing, but not spy enough. Too far for a southern guy. Can't see it.
5. Miami Dolphins -Crock Pot on low- Peyton in Miami? What? They aren't ready and he doesn't want to face Ryan & Belichick twice a year. 
6. San Francisco 49ers: -Crock Pot on Serve- Niners stick with Alex Smith. Draft Sanu.
7. Washington Redskins: -Artic- Shanahan is the genius and must stay that way to keep his job. Peyton won't face his brother, Vick and Romo twice a year. Zero intrigue. Skins take Tannehill at 6. 

Rich Cimini on Fanny's Freudian Slip

Maybe I'm making something out of nothing (I've been guilty of that before), but I thought this was worth passing along.
GM Mike Tannenbaum did a three-minute interview from Indianapolis with Eric Allen of the team's official web site, and near the end, Tannenbaum was asked about his philosophy of building through the draft. Tannenebaum mentioned the following players, in order, as examples of that philosophy – D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Nick Mangold, Darrelle Revis,David Harris and Kyle Wilson.
"That's the nucleus of our team," Tannenbaum said.
Wait a second: Does anybody find it odd that he didn't mention the most significant acquisition of his three-year association with Rex Ryan – Mark Sanchez? I mean, he was only the fifth pick in the 2009 draft, the second-highest drafted player in the Tannenbaum era. (Ferguson was the fourth pick in 2006.)
Peyton-ologists will have a field day with this omission. Has Sanchez slipped that far in the eyes of the team brass? Wilson gets a mention but not the starting quarterback? Look, maybe Tannenbaum had a bad meal at Steak N' Shake and was looking to get out of the interview ASAP, but I still found this a bit curious.

Scenario: Peyton Manning signs with New York Jets

• Peyton decides to make the big move. He wants to go to New York and have it be Manning vs. Manning. This move has the biggest chain reaction. I personally think this is the smartest place for Peyton. 
• The Jets could use their first round pick on Trent Richardson or a high impact defender. Free agents would love to come to NY and chase rings with Peyton and Rex.
• Colts select Andrew Luck
• Rams auction off second overall pick, Browns trade both first rounders and 4th round pick to move up and take Robert Griffin III.
• Washington Redskins miss out on Manning and RG3, but end up with Ryan Tannehill with 6th overall pick and sign Kyle Orton.
• Dolphins sign Matt Flynn to compete with Matt Moore.
• Seahawks send a third round pick to the New York Jets for Mark Sanchez to reunite him with Pete Carroll.
• Cardinals stick with Kolb and Skelton.

1. Colts: Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford

Now, I know everyone is starting freak-out over RG3’s arm strength, but the Combine be damned, in the end Irsay is a white guy who will pick a white guy to be the face of the franchise. Privately, the merchandize excuse will be given. So relax Johnny U., the only thing black will be your high-tops and the night they snuck out of Baltimore. Pollan would have chosen RG3.

2. Browns: Robert Griffin, QB, Baylor

Good fortune shines on Coach Fisher. First Cam explodes, the Colts pass on RG3, and the next big thing (aka the “Evolution”) is there for the taking! Sam Bradford has so much promise that the Rams find a partner with deep pockets. Make it rain! TRADE!

3. Ravens: Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State

Ozzie purchases a ticket to the Super Bowl for the Ravens! Harbaugh can manage aging superstars and Peyton will extend the shelf life of the roster. Evans will not be invited back. Vikings are more than one player away. Ravens shoot for the moon. The Gods return a/the Colts to Baltimore. The Vikings need a little of everything. TRADE!

4. Rams (from Browns): Matt Kalil, OT, USC

Fisher gets real, not flashy. Kalil will provide time for Bradford to get the ball down field, and Fisher knows his brilliance is tied to Bradford’s health.

5. Buccaneers: Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina

Teams must be effective attacking the passer with 4. Top QB’s check away from schemes. Coples is a freak, and Butch Davis is joining the Bucs coaching staff as an advisor.

6. Cowboys: Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU

Redskins sign Flaco so RG3 is not in the plan. There is a lot to like at 6, but Jerry does Dallas. He is hungry for big moves, and to upgrade a weak secondary after dropping Kirkpatrick down their board. Cowboys reach for the best CB prospect in this year’s draft. TRADE!

7. Jaguars: Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa

Everyone is down on Blaine Gabbert, except Jacksonville. Improved protection is a must. The expectation is improved play from their young QB, unless he starts dating a Kardashian!

8. Dolphins: Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford

After missing out on Manning, I expect the Dolphins to sign Matt Flynn. Duh, there is an early run at OT. They are tempted to draft Kendall Wright. Wright’s speed would help clear the mid-range zones for Marshall. Caveat Emptor, Flynn could be the second coming of Kolb. Poor little fishes, there are very few quick fixes in the NFL.

9. Panthers: David DeCastro, G, Stanford

Cam now DeCastro. This is too easy.

10. Bills: Michael Brockers, DT, LSU

Brockers is a man-child. He will be ready when the Bills are. Perfect timing and not too soon. Bills are close.

11. Chiefs: Devon Still, DE/DT, Penn State

Defenses must attack. Add Still to a good group of LB’s.

12. Seahawks: Courtney Upshaw, DE/OLB, Alabama

Pete Carroll feels lucky and everyone loves speed on the edge. Upshaw falls to the Trojans, I mean the Seahawks.

13. Cardinals: Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama

Best player on their board. They add to last year’s standout Patrick Peterson.

14. Redskins: (from Cowboys) Mike Adams, OT, Ohio State

Redskins add insurance for newly acquired Joe Flaco. Shanahan knows Flaco will fit with his run first offense. Redskins will sign a top free agent WR, and draft one in the later rounds. Shanahan has visions of Elway. “A man’s greatest strength is his greatest weakness”.

15. Eagles: Luke Kuechly, ILB, Boston College

If the Eagles don’t over think the pick, it will be Kuechly. Andy loves to look smarter than the rest of the room. That understated stuff is a front.

16. Jets: Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama

Pound and ground. LT retires. They stick with Sanchez for another year, so they must effectively run the ball. Sanchez may develop like Eli, or become David Carr. Play action may be the key.

17. Bengals: Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama

Jenkins has too much talent to pass because of past personal issues. He checks out.

18. Chargers: Kendall Wright, WR/KR, Baylor

Need an injection of speed. Never replaced Sproles.

19. Bears: Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame

Cutler is all piss and vinegar. Privately he is pleased with the new direction. In with Floyd and out with Martz. They will find a TE later in the draft.

20. Titans, Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina

Big, strong, possession receiver. Great value at 20.

21. Bengals: Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska

I know! The Bengals double dip. They miss Jonathan Joseph that much.

22. Rams: (from Browns) Nick Perry, DE/OLB, USC

Prototypical edge rusher. High risk, high reward.

23. Lions: Whitney Mercilus, DE/OLB, Illinois

Lions want to attack on defense. Mercilus fits the program.

24. Steelers: Don’t’a Hightower, ILB, Alabama

No longer the best LB group in the league. Steelers are acting strange. This pick quiets the critics.

25. Broncos: Stephon Gilmore, CB, South Carolina

Teams play nickel and dime 25% of the time. Personal must reflect the new dynamic.

26. Texans: Dontari Poe, NT, Memphis

The early run on WR leads Texans to plan B. Must look to free agency and for value later in the draft to add a WR. Bigger nose added to an excellent 3 – 4.

27. Pats: Mohamed Sanu, WR, Rutgers

Must stretch the field. Giants, as expected, crowded the box. Brady must do more than run the football through the air. Sanu offers an option to 3 yards and a cloud of dust.

28. Packers: Jerel Worthy, DE/DT, Michigan State

Raji plays too many downs. Need a viable rotation. Wore down.

29. Vikings: (from Ravens), Melvin Ingram, DE, South Carolina

Lawrence Taylor or Taylor Lawrence? Worth the risk at 29.

30. 49ers: Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M

They resign Smith, but they press for the next step. WR is an option, but must wait to the 2nd round. 1st tier wide outs already off the board.

31. Pats: Mark Barron, SS, Alabama

The 6th player from Alabama taken in the first round. Roll tide. Barron’s a steal at 31.

32. Giants: Zach Brown, OLB, North Carolina

Zach Brown already has Pro Bowl coverage skills. Needs to improve at the point of attack. If the Giants don’t resign Deon Grant, then either Jones or Sash must step up. The other option is to play less 3 safety. Kiwanuka, Boley, Williams, and Brown would make for the fastest LB group in the league and mitigate the loss of Grant. Rolle can step out of the box and into Grant’s slot. If Barron falls, he could be an option. TE is needed. Reese will take the player that falls to him, with Brown being the first choice.

New York Giant, General Manager, Jerry Reese, has been vindicated and has finally climbed out of George and Ernie’s shadow. He can now take his place among the great Giant GM’s. No longer can the neutral observer not give him his due. Even his Head Coach, who is averse to change, has not been able to frustrate the development of this refreshed roster. Below are 3 reasons why Jerry Reese should be executive of the year.

1. Reese drafts for value. He will slightly account for need. Only in the later rounds will you see him fill an existing or future hole in the roster. Character does not go over-looked. He has an excellent eye for the bottom half of his roster. Think of all of the guys who have filled in when needed.  

2. Reese is a brutally honest evaluator of his roster. We have seen him reach into free agency to add Baas, Boley, Bernard, Canty, Grant, and Rolle. Each one of these additions have made a positive impact, and have been an important component to this year’s Super Bowl run. How many players has he let move on? How many regrets?

3. Reese has put together a player personal and scouting department that deserves praise for unearthing undrafted free agents that have not only made the roster, but have added to the winning formula. Obviously, Victor Cruz is the gemstone of this group.

Enjoy the Giants in this year’s Super Bowl. Try and remember how each player came to be a New York Giant. You may begin to appreciate the job Jerry Reese has done in turning over this roster, since the Giants last Super Bowl appearance 4 years ago.

What The NY JETS Must Do!

• Sign Chad Henne thru Free Agency.

As good or better than Mark Sanchez. Sparano! 

• Trade Mark Sanchez for a 2012 pick.

The heat in the locker room is to much. It's either him or Santonio. The JETS say Holmes is staying!

• Sign Peyton Manning!

NO BRAINER! The Manning brothers both in the NY/NJ Market?!?!? Goodell is salivating, Sexy Rexy has a man crush, merchandising will go thru the roof, Eli & Peyton can BBQ....I can go on and on and on and on....NEED I SAY MORE?

• Trade Dustin Keller for a 2012 pick.

He's gone. The rumor is out. 

• Sign Dallas Clark.

He's available and Peyton will throw to him all day. He will not go back to the Colts.

• Trade down with the 16th pick

Swap firsts (#22) with Cleveland and get there 2012 3rd round pick. The Jets need help in a lot of areas.
