NY JETS: WITH REVIS OUT, SHOULD THE JETS CLEAN HOUSE?

Darrelle Revis, top five defensive player in the NFL, is out for the year. Before his injury, Gang Green looked good on defense. Not great...Good. Good enough to win some games if the offense could score some points. Not a lot of points....Some. Well, now Revis is out and all bets are off...Unless....It's Tebow time! Bring the freak in and let it roll. What do you have to lose? Sanchez is the lowest rated QB in the league. His fault or not the J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS need to wake up! TEBOW OR BUST!

Start the process of trading the dead wood now. Start accumulating draft picks for next year and beyond. My colleague at NFL PRO ZACH, The Professor, suggested trading all players over the age of 28. He may be on to something. The players coming out of college now are NFL READY! There is noticable strength & speed differences in the younger teams in the NFL. The NY JETS look slow.

Here's the list:

-Calvin Pace: He's worth a 5^th or 6^th round pick. Sign Sapp from the practice squad and promote Maybin.

-Dustin Keller: He's worth a 3^rd or 4^th round pick. Sign Hayden Smith from the practice squad and promote Epps. Heck, Tebow needs a Rugby player on the field!

-Mike Devito: He's worth a 5^th or 6^th round pick. Promote Coples.

-Santonio Holmes: Eat some salary and get a 3^rd round pick from the Cowboys!

-Eric Smith: Get a 6^th.

-Bryan Thomas: trade him for complaining about being cut then resigned! Get a 6^th rounder.

-Mark Sanchez: Get a 3^rd round pick and move on. The Browns or Chiefs may take him.

NFL TRADE DEADLINE:

The National Football League's deadline is the Tuesday following the eighth week (formally sixth) of the regular season, which typically falls in mid-October. However, this was changed for the 2012 N.F.L. Season, with the deadline being moved ahead two weeks in hopes of more trade activity at the deadline. Usually, there is fairly little activity on this day and almost no star players are ever dealt to other clubs on the sixth week of the season. The early deadline, along with players having to learn a whole new system on the fly, along with the salary cap often makes it difficult to make blockbuster trades on this day, unlike most other sports.

Broncos star Tim Tebow once touted the Bible passage John 3:16 on his eye-black during his days as a Florida Gator, but the scripture passage gained more attention after the quarterback's 316 yards passing helped Denver clinch a nail-biting, overtime victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.

The quarterback's highly publicized Christian image has long been discussed among sports fans nationwide, but what's the significance of Tebow's favorite scripture passage and how has religion played a role in sports?

John 3:16 is a central scripture passage for Evangelical Christians, and it reads:

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

When Tebow etched the scripture in his eye-black for the 2009 BCS Championship Game, about 92 million people conducted a web search for the term, the Palm Beach Post reports.

During the game against the Steelers, the three-number sequence popped up more than a few times.

As our brilliant commenters point out below, Tebow completed 10 passes. That means he averaged 31.6 yards per pass. His final pass was to Thomas who just happens to have been born on Christmas Day. (!)

Oh and this: the Steelers-Broncos game was the most-watched wild-card game since 1988. In the final quarter-hour, the overnight rating was 31.6. Weird stuff man, weird stuff.

As it turns out, the lone interception thrown in the game on Sunday night came from Ben Roethlisberger. What down and distance were involved when he threw it? Third and 16. Of course.

But despite all of the flak, Tebow, perhaps unsurprisingly, had one person to thank after Sunday's win.

"First and foremost I just want to thank my Lord and savior, Jesus Christ. He's done so much in my life."

Jets not adverse to drafting another quarterback

If three’s company, then the Jets’ quarterback situation could soon be a crowd.

Despite having recently signed Mark Sanchez to a five-year deal and trading for a “backup” in Tim Tebow, not to mention drafting Greg McElroy last April, the Jets haven’t ruled out selecting another quarterback in this week’s NFL Draft. The team carried four quarterbacks last year, including McElroy who spent his rookie season out with a 
dislocated thumb, so the precedent is certainly there.

“We can keep four quarterbacks and we will just see how the draft unfolds. I would definitely not rule out a quarterback. Going back to the Ron Wolf/Mike Holmgren thing, when you look at Aaron Brooks and just go all the way down the line of all the guys they drafted — Rob Johnson, [Matt] Hasselbeck — they did a great job for a lot of years developing quarterbacks. If you look at their sustainability, that was a bedrock of it,” general manager Mike Tannenbaum said.

“Again, I am not saying that Greg [McElroy] will turn into a front-line starter, but he played well in the preseason. He almost led us against Houston [last preseason] and he has done good things for us. Obviously, he was hurt, but classroom time and he’s a hard worker, we are excited about what he can do, but I would not rule that out.”

The addition of Tebow, of course, is the interesting component in all of this. While the Jets have repeatedly made it a point that Tebow is coming in behind Sanchez on the depth chart and will be the quarterback of their “Wildcat” package, his unique skillset certainly makes him an intriguing player at a position that remains unsettled with the Jets.

Sanchez’s third year in the league showed little progress and the Jets failed to make the playoffs. His decision making was poor, he frequently got rattled and his sack and interception numbers were both up over his second year.

Enter Tebow, who won the starting quarterback job in Denver last year. Despite rumors that Tebow will play in the backfield or could get some snaps on special teams, Tannenbaum is committed to his newest quarterback being just that — a quarterback first and foremost.

Albeit his “backup.”

“He has some versatility. He is our backup quarterback. That is how we are listing him; that is how we are going to carry him on our roster,” Tannenbaum said.

“Again, that could be more like a subtle tiebreaker, knowing he has a unique skillset and athleticism. In terms of how we are looking at our strategy, he is clearly at quarterback for us and that is how we are listing him.”

If the Jets, who have 10 picks in the draft, decide to forego drafting a quarterback, there is certainly talent available among the pool of rookie free agents. A source told Metro New York that University of Albany’s Dan Dillela will likely be targeted after the draft.

“The Jets really like his skillset,” the source said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if he is their first player signed as an undrafted free agent. He has good arm strength and all the right physical tools.”
